Gridiron football, or American football or football, as the US tends to refer to it, is a sport which is rather difficult to play and can be hard on the body and have consequences if you are not trained well. Even then, head injuries and concussions are pretty normal in the game, not to mention all the torn muscles and lighter injuries that might come from a full contact sport such as football.
Women in football were rare and especially in a league such as the NFL. The NFL players are men, only, for now.
That should change at some point, but when, is the right question. When are women going to play in the NFL and should they, or should they have their own league?
Women’s Football Alliance
There have been several interesting women’s leagues through the years in the United States. The Independent Women’s Football League was there from the year 2000 until 2018 and it had its own success, but ultimately, it was disbanded.
The current league that people should be paying attention to is the Women’s Football Alliance, which was founded in 2009 and had its first season the same year.
The league has had three divisions since 2016, the pro division, Division 2 and Division 3. The pro division hosts the best teams while the rest are divided into Division 2 and 3. There are a total of 64 teams playing in the league. A total of 11 teams are playing in the pro league, making their matches the most interesting to watch. However, the teams in the other divisions can always rank up, so make sure to pay attention to those matches as well.
The league also has international programs and support, to help teams in Central and South America, as well as those in Africa and Europe.
Should Women Join the NFL?
Well, yes, of course, there should always be an official NFL women’s league, which would give women’s football a boost in popularity that they need. However, given that the WFA is already hosting annual seasons and that they have had much success and lots of expansion, there is a question of whether the NFL should even bother.
Generally, women’s football would benefit a lot from NFL support, however, that is yet to happen, which makes the WFA much more valuable.
When, If Ever?
This is a good question which doesn’t have a concrete answer. Women are working in the NFL, just not as players. Given WFA’s success and their push for more players and teams, especially international support, it is unlikely that we will see the NFL accommodating women players any time soon.
In the meantime, the WFA is more than good enough for any football fan.
