Bird Watching – It’s an Amazing Pastime!

As far as pastime activities go, we all find various things to do to make ourselves feel better. Pastime activities can be anything from playing video games, working out, to going outdoors with a pair of binoculars and observing our avian friends.

Yet, bird watching is one of the best hobbies that you can have, a calming and interesting activity that takes you away from the city into nature, to have a great time and enjoy your day in the great outdoors.

Here are a couple of reasons why you should consider bird watching as your next hobby.

Bird Watching is Fun

One of the first things that comes to mind when we think about bird watching is fun. It is really interesting to go outdoors and seek out birds, based on the knowledge that you have about where they might nest. Sure, you can always look up bird watching groups on social media and forums and get advice from them, particularly if there are any locals who can give you directions.

Then, you would have to choose the right distance to observe your avian friends from, which makes the activity even more interesting.

Sometimes, we don’t have the right angle from a certain position, and we must get closer, which might scare the birds away.

This requires knowing the wind direction and orienting ourselves so that we don’t alert the birds unnecessarily.

Bird Watching is Great Exercise

Going outdoors with equipment, usually into a forest or mountain, means exercise, any way you put it. You have to trek for at least a couple of miles and even then, you have to sometimes climb and get into interesting positions in order to be able to see the birds.

Carrying only a pair of binoculars if you’re going to spend an entire day outdoors is not a good idea. You need at least water bottles, food and layers of clothing, depending on the season. Likewise, carrying bird watching accessories is a must, so there will be gear adding to the overall mass you have to carry.

This means lots of exercise, which is good for both the body and the mind.

Bird Watching is a Social Activity

Typically, bird watches rarely go alone, unless in certain situations, like someone really wanting to go alone.

Bird watching is more often than not, a social activity, where people go outdoors to spend time with one another, while also enjoying some exercise and a lovely hobby.

Thus, bird watching becomes a great activity to do with your friends or other bird watching aficionados, who might become your friends given enough time.

It’s Educational and Calming

There is something very calming about watching birds go about their day. It is similar to spending our time with any other animals we enjoy the company of, albeit in this case, we are just observers.

Bird watching is also very educational. Experienced bird watchers know how to tell a bird from their call and feather in only a couple of seconds after hearing or seeing one.

If you don’t have a pastime activity, consider bird watching. It is more fun than you might think!
